HISTORY
The emergence of Yerong Creek Estate as a popular locally owned and operated winery producing an impressive range of boutique wines is a success story founded on Australian spirit and determination.
It is indeed a story of a family pulling together to fight back in the face of adversity to recover from the forces of Mother Nature and then forge ahead with their passion to produce wines and build a successful business.
Yerong Creek Estate’s first vines were planted in August 1996. Tragically, the vineyard suffered a setback on 21 December 1997, when a bushfire devastated the vineyard destroying 90 per cent of the vines, drip watering system and wooden posts.
With the help of family and friends a new drip watering system was quickly erected to water the vines and start again.
The vines have been tenderly trained, pruned and harvested. In February 2000 the first small harvest of a half ton of Chardonnay and one ton of Shiraz was harvested by hand at perfection. These grapes were from the vines that survived the devastation of fire. With Paul Robey from Walla Walla as winemaker, the family assisted in the winemaking process of the first vintage, down to bottling and labelling, to signal a milestone for Yerong Creek Estate.
YERONG CREEK ESTATE WINEMAKING
In 2001 Cofield Wines at Wahgunyah was employed as Yerong Creek Estate’s contract winemaker. This has led to expanding our range of boutique wines
Our latest success has been the Spirit of Yerong Fortified Wine.
It was named Best Fortified Wine at the 2005 Winewise Small Vignerons Awards and was awarded a silver medal at the 2005 Cowra Wine Show.
Yerong Creek Estates uses their own Shiraz and Chardonnay grown in the vineyard to produce white and red wines. They have experimented with their Chardonnay to produce a range of styles. Yerong Creek Estate’s Shiraz vintages are big, full of colour and have lovely ripe raspberry flavours.Their wines are made to be enjoyed – they are attractive when young, but will certainly reward careful cellaring. Enjoy!
Our wines are also available at the Hume-Murray Food Bowl Farmers' Market (see Magical Markets).
