A Regional Insight
We recently caught up with Motorsport legend Brad Jones of V8 Supercar TeamBOC about his association with the Albury Wodonga area.
How long have you lived in the area and was it in town or out on the farm?
I have lived in town all my life.
What do you remember most fondly about growing up in the area?
A 5 minute car trip and you’re out of the city limits or as a small boy you can usually walk for 5 to 10 minutes and find some bush land to play in or ride your bike.
Great friends from school and still great mates now.
How did you get in to motor racing?
My father was a huge influence and cars were his life. He was the president of the Albury Wodonga car club while my brother and I where growing up so it was only natural that we ended up competing in motorsport.
Has being based in the area helped you with your competition, ie; being based in a central location?
I don’t think being centrally located has helped a great deal, to tell the truth it is sometimes tougher convincing people to leave the capital city for employment. Any difficulty we incur is offset by the lifestyle we have living in the border region, It’s a fantastic place to grow up and live.
When you get some time off, what do you for recreation in the area?
Gokarting, water skiing , bike riding. Spending time with my kids while they play local sport.
Quite a few sporting champions have come from Albury-Wodonga, what do you think the reason for this is?
I don’t really know but it certainly looks like we have a high level of sporting achievers per head of population compared to any major city. I think the life style available in Albury Wodonga allows you the opportunity to follow your dreams a little easier and perhaps that’s the reason why.
Where would you take guests for a day-trip of the area?
Beechworth, Snow fields or the winery’s. In the summer the Hume weir a great place to spend a day or two.
Where in the area do you like to go for a nice meal and a few drinks?
Usually the SS&A club, but there are many nice restaurants in the local area with options of varied cuisines.
Could you please sum up the area in one sentence?
I have traveled the world many times over and haven’t found a place I would rather live and bring up my family.
Thank you for your time Brad Jones.
