Welcome to Tallangatta

With the raising of the Hume Dam in 1956, the old town of Tallangatta was moved, house by house, to the site on which it now stands, 7km west of the original village. A stopover on the way to the snowfields, Tallangatta is set at the bottom of the Kiewa River Valley in hilly country a few kilometres west of Lake Hume.

Located just a couple of kilometres off Kiewa Valley Highway, Tallangatta is about 30-minutes’ drive (42km) from the provincial centre of Albury-Wodonga. The Mitta River runs by the township, watering dairy cattle country that is home to the Australian Red Breed Society of dairy cattle. Some great trout fishing to be done in the rivers and streams, and you can take worthwhile scenic tours. Just a short drive to the east takes you to the Mt Granya State Park, which conserves 6000ha of steep, rock-strewn slopes and eucalypt forested tableland. Visitors can drive to the top of 870m Mt Granya where they can picnic while enjoying the superb views over valleys and fellow mountains. The Lyrebird Walking Track begins from the picnic area.
